Mattress and Bedding Buyer's Guide

Thinking of buying a new mattress?

There a lot of choices available out there. Different sizes, thicknesses, styles and materials - and how do you know which one is right for you? Use this quick buyer's guide to help point you in the right direction. The most popular varieties will be discussed to help you find the right bed for your budget and comfort.

How to Tell If You Need a New Mattress:

Since you're looking at this website, you probably already think you need a new mattress. But just in case you're not sure, here's a quick guide to help you decide.

Mattresses are designed to last for several years. How many? Well that depends on the mattress. But if the one you are currently sleeping on is more than 9 years old, chances are very good that it's time for a new one. If you ever wake up sore or feeling un-rested, your mattress is either not the right one for you or it is suffering from old age. A mattress in good condition should maintain a regular shape. Check to see if there is noticeable sag in the middle of the mattress or wherever you typically sleep. If so, it's time to come see us and get some help finding the right mattress for you.

The right mattress can dramatically increase the quality of your sleep and the effectiveness of your daytime activities. You spend as much time, or more, sleeping in your bed than you do at work, so you owe it to yourself to make the most of that time with a mattress that is right for you.

What You Need to Know About Coils:

Most mattresses have metal coils in the mattress core. These coils are responsible for supporting your body and are very important to the comfort of your mattress. Here are some helpful hints on how to interpret information provided on the coils of a mattress.

Typically a mattress will boast how many coils are in it. The number or coils are but one factor that determines how much support it gives. As relevant as the number of coils is the gauge of the wire used to construct the coil unit. In other words, the thickness of the wire used in the coil unit helps determine the support level of the coil unit.  It's important to try out a variety of mattresses and note what kind of support you prefer.

Besides the number or coils, the gauge of coils also varies between mattresses. The gauge equals the number of coils of that size it would take to make an inch. Heavy gauge coils are thicker and generally offer more support. Light gauge coils are thinner and offer less support. Beware of mattresses with low coil counts but heavy gauges being represented as firm mattresses. That combination often quickly becomes lumpy and uncomfortable. Compare the number and gauge of coils when trying out mattresses to see what range you prefer.

The Top Upholstery and Fabric Layers:

It's not just the inner core of the mattress that influences its support and comfort. There are a variety of top upholsteries that can prove to be very important for basic comfort. Choose a pillow top if you want to feel like you are sleeping on a feather bed but still get the support of a solid mattress. If you prefer your mattress firm, look for thin upholsteries that don't interfere with the support of the coils.

The fabric that is used in the construction of the mattress is also very important in terms of comfort and price. You can choose mattresses with additional layers of wool, silk, foam and cotton. This can increase the comfort, but also increases the price. Look into your layers carefully and consult with a sales person. Sometimes, these extra layers of padding can be compressed and break down sooner than the springs, making your mattress feel concave or lumpy. Keep in mind that you can add some of these layers yourself with removable liners and pads that can be replaced should they break down. Look for the right balance between comfort and price for you.

What Size Is Right For You?

Well only you can answer that question. But to help you with your measurements, below is a listing the standard sizes of mattresses.

Twin: 39": x 75":

Double: 54": x 75":

Queen: 60": x 80":

King: 76": x 80":

Non Spring Mattresses:

There are several types of mattresses available that do not use springs and coils. Memory foam mattresses can sometimes be less expensive than other types, though the price can vary dramatically depending on the brand and quality. The foam molds to your body shape and is sensitive to your body weight and body heat. A great foam mattress can be wonderful to sleep on; a poor one can quickly break down and form permanent lumps or depressions, making them very uncomfortable. The heavier the foam, the more it will hold up over time. Serta's exclusive Kool Comfort memory foam is highly regarded as one of the finest materials used in bedding today and is the only memory foam product used in Serta bedding.

There are also latex foam mattresses on the market today. This type of foam also conforms to your body shape and can alleviate areas of high pressure and be very comfortable. Laytex also has some other great features, including that it is hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial, dust-mite resistant and breathable.

Latex foam mattresses are usually more expensive because latex is an expensive material. However, these mattresses can last much longer than spring mattresses, making them possibly cheaper over the course of their lifetime. Keep in mind that there are several types of latex foam mattresses available using different forms of latex. Serta exclusively uses Talalay latex, the most consistent, durable, and most expensive latex on the market.

The Extras You Really Do Need:

We know that you are looking for a comfortable mattress at a fair price. Don't be lured in with bottomed out prices that leave you holding the bill for the extra services that should be included when buying a new mattress.

Make sure you consider how your mattress will get to your home as well as what will happen to your old mattress and box spring. Most people can't fit their new purchase in their own vehicle and don't have a place to dispose of their old mattress and box spring. The store you buy from should have plans available to assist you with this.

The three basic levels of every sleep set:

1. Comfort Level

The feeling you get when you first lie down on a mattress comes from the foams and fibers used in the upholstery layers above the innerspring.

In Serta® mattresses, these special fibers and responsive, body-conforming foams are designed to ease pressure points along the body. This reduces tossing and turning, and gives you a better night's sleep.

2. Support Level

The innerspring provides the support characteristics of the mattress, and Serta makes its innersprings from double-tempered steel coils. The "Coil Count" or number of coils in a mattress varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Of course, it also depends on size of the mattress. (In other words, twin mattresses will have fewer coils, while queens and kings will have more.)

When you compare Serta's coil count and wire gauge with competitive brands, you'll notice several significant differences. Serta's unique innerspring consists of rows of wire coils that run from head to toe along the life of the body. Because the coil rows run head-to-toe, they respond to each sleeper individually and help reduce partner movement.

3. Foundation Level

The foundation is the base of the sleep set and works in unison with the mattress to provide proper support and durability. The foundation is designed to complement the performance of the mattress. Purchasing just the mattress or foundation alone reduces the overall durability of the set.

Serta's Perfect Sleeper StabL-Base Triple Beam Foundation that provides consistent support across the bottom of the mattress and lasting durability to the entire sleep set. Its unique V-shaped construction isolates the impact of one sleep partner's movements on the other. Serta's patented Triple Beam design delivers durability and strength from the ground up, and is more than twice as strong as traditional wood frames.

Your New Bedding Purchase

Today's quality mattresses use technologically advanced foams and fibers that are designed to be softer and more comfortable while ensuring your body has the support you need for good health. By cradling your body, these materials relieve pressure and are so comfortable that you'll probably toss and turn less in the night. For that reason, in the first few weeks you sleep on a new mattress that offers these extra comfort layers, you might notice some "settling" on the mattress surface.

These impressions are normal and shouldn't be considered a sign that something is wrong with your new mattress. Unless your mattress care instructions indicate otherwise, you may want to rotate your mattress from end-to-end and from top-to-bottom. After a few weeks, the impressions will begin to smooth out and, over time, disappear.

* You may feel a slight discomfort with your new mattress for the first week or so. This is normal and to be expected as your body is used to the old mattress and your new one is now supporting your body. Please contact us if you have any questions after your purchase. We will be glad to work with you to ensure your total satisfaction

* It may take up to 2 weeks for your body to adjust to your new mattress.

* The mattress should conform to you, NOT you to it.

* Rotate your mattress as often as the warranty card reads.

* The layers of foams and fibers in old mattresses generally have become compressed and flattened over the years. Upholstery layers in a new mattress have a certain amount of air in these materials. In addition, a break in period is required. This is when new materials begin to settle and conform to the shapes and curves of the body. This takes time. While this adjustment is taking place, creases, or "comfort wrinkles," may be noticeable. This is a natural process and these creases are not defects. To help the new sleep system complete this adjustment to personal needs, the sleep set needs to be maintained. This settling of materials can be evened out by rotating the mattress on a regular basis. It is recommended that the mattress is alternately turned once every two weeks for the first three months, and then twice per year after that. The foundation should also be turned every 12 months.

* The other part of the bedding investment is the use of a proper frame. A queen or king sized bed needs to have a frame with a center support to compensate for any set. Serta, as well as all major bedding manufacturers, require a center support for queen and king mattress sets to honor the warranty.

* Vacuuming is the only recommended way to clean a mattress. A quality, water proof, washable mattress pad will help keep the sleep set free from stains.
